Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT)
Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT) or animal “chiropractic” is the restoration of normal motion between joints or motion units.
Reduced joint motion (also known as “subluxation”) impacts surrounding nerves and their downstream targets (muscles) and is clinically manifested in weakness or pain.
Animal “chiropractors” identify these problem areas by assessing each joint individually (“motion palpation”) and applying a specific force (“thrust”) to affect the joint in play.
By improving the motion within joints, VSMT may reduce pain, restore joint range of motion, allow for strengthening and improved balance ; it can even improve mood and cognitive function!
During a VSMT evaluation, the doctor will assess your pet’s body (muscles, joints, spine) to identify reduced motion in joints, heat, pain or swelling. Using her hands, the doctor will apply a high velocity, low amplitude “thrust” to correct the “subluxation” or decreased motion in the joint.
